Warmup was uneventful on Saturday. But, qual turned out to be a different matter. On one of the laps, I was coming around turn 6, and saw two other Miatas coming up from behind. I knew the first one would not pose a problem, and I lifted a bit to let him by. But, looking at the second one approach, I knew that he was going to “go deep” and try to take me before the top of the corkscrew. I’m setting up to give him a clean pass, pulling all the way to the right side of the track – my right wheels were almost in the dirt. As he passes me, he swerves to the right (to track out for the turn), and hits my front left side with his right rear. After he recovers, he makes the left turn into the top of the corkscrew. (video)
I was PISSED!
There was no reason for that aggressive behavior. When I reported it to the officials, they seemed mostly uninterested, though they said if I could come back with video, I might be able to get “justice”. I asked what “justice” was, and they didn’t have a good answer.
When I got back to the paddock, it was clear that my investment in making the car look nice had been undone by some aggressive asshole.

I approached him the nest morning, at which point he accused me of turning in early and being the one responsible for the collision. Apparently he had the balls to incite a wreck, but not the balls it took to admit it. I wanted to but those balls up between his tonsils, but cooler heads prevailed.
After beating out the damage to make the car runnable again...

Sunday was completed without further incident.
